Google Quantum AI
Earl Campbell is a Research Scientist in the Quantum AI team at Google, where he works on fault-tolerant quantum algorithms and compilation. He has worked in quantum computing since starting his PhD at the University of Oxford in 2005, and his contributions span quantum error correction — including qudit codes, magic state theory, fault-tolerant architectures and protocols, decoders, qLDPC codes and single-shot error correction — as well as quantum algorithms, especially randomised approaches such as qDRIFT. Before joining Google in 2026, he spent four years at Riverlane, first as Head of Architecture and then as VP of Quantum Science, leading the company's quantum error correction research. Earlier, he was a Senior Research Scientist at Amazon Web Services, working on quantum algorithms and error correction, and he has been a member of staff at the University of Sheffield since 2014, including five years as an EPSRC Research Fellow, most recently as a part-time Professor. He was previously a postdoc in Jens Eisert's group at Freie Universität Berlin.
