Maria Violaris

Oxford Quantum Circuits

Maria Violaris is a quantum physicist at Oxford Quantum Circuits, working on quantum error correction research and science communication, including recent work on error correction with superconducting erasure qubits. Maria studied physics at the University of Oxford, graduating with a first-class MPhys, and went on to a DPhil in the foundations of quantum information with Vlatko Vedral and Artur Ekert, with a thesis on counterfactuals in macroscopic quantum physics covering irreversibility, measurement and locality. Before joining OQC in 2024, Maria worked with the Qiskit team at IBM Quantum, creating the "Quantum Paradoxes" video series and lecturing at the Qiskit Global Summer School, and interned at Riverlane. Maria writes for Physics World, hosts the Quantum Foundations Podcast, founded the Oxford Quantum Information Society, and reached the Grand Final of the Institute of Physics 3-Minute Wonder science communication competition at the Royal Institution in 2024.
